SPECIFIC CKD Heart & Kidney Support has particularly high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA derived from fish oil. In dogs with heart disease, EPA helps maintain lean body mass and appetite, as well as normal heart rate, blood pressure and platelet aggregation. In dogs with renal failure, omega-3 fatty acids help to slow the progression of renal failure. In congestive heart failure, sodium excretion is reduced as part of the compensatory response mechanism, with consequent sodium and water retention. The reduced sodium level helps to break the vicious cycle of water retention, which is essential in patients with renal, hepatic and cardiac failure. A restricted phosphorus content is essential to reduce hyperphosphatemia and to slow the progression of renal failure. The reduced protein content in combination with its high biological value reduces azotaemia in dogs with renal failure. In dogs with liver failure, it reduces the likelihood of hyperammonaemia and the possibility of hepatic encephalopathy. The high biological value of proteins meets the dog's essential amino acid requirements. Protein restriction reduces urinary concentrations of oxalates, cystine and urates, which together with the alkaline urinary pH prevents the precipitation of calcium oxalate, cystine and urates crystals and contributes to a healthy urinary tract. Added potassium citrate helps to keep calcium oxalate in solution.

Heart & Kidney Support is indicated for dogs with heart failure, hypertension, edema, chronic renal failure, liver failure (except patients with cholestasis) and urolithiasis due to urate, oxalate or cystine. Not indicated for puppies and pregnant or lactating bitches, dogs with relatively high protein requirements, patients with cholestasis: a diet with reduced fat content is more appropriate (such as SPECIFIC® Weight Reduction or senior diets), dogs with struvite urolithiasis and dogs with hyperlipidemia or pancreatitis.
