Why don't cats like Christmas trees?

Christmas is a magical time, but if you have a cat at home, you've probably noticed that this magic isn't always well-received. Find out why in this article.

Porque é que os gatos não gostam de árvores de Natal?

Christmas is a magical time, full of lights, decorations and, of course, the famous Christmas tree. But if you have a cat at home, you've probably noticed that this magic isn't always well-received. Some cats shy away from the tree, while others can't resist playing with or knocking down the ornaments. But why is it that cats don't like Christmas trees ?

Natural instinct of cats

Cats are predators by nature and, therefore, very curious. Any new object in their territory, such as a Christmas tree, sparks interest, but also caution. The smell, texture, and instability of the tree can cause your cat to hesitate before approaching. Some cats prefer to observe from afar, while others explore as closely as possible and even "attack" the Christmas tree.

Some reasons why cats "attack" the Christmas tree:

  • Christmas trees look like real trees;

  • -Toys hanging everywhere;

  • -Movement and reflections of lights and decorations;

  • -Desire to climb;

  • -Stored energy;

Tips for keeping cats away from Christmas trees:

  • - Avoid placing the tree in corners where the cat can use furniture as a "trampoline";
  • - Wrap the base with aluminum foil. The reflection from the foil scares some cats and keeps them away from the tree;
  • Leave the tree without decorations for 24 hours so your cat can get used to it before adding more stimuli.
