What is cat malt?

Cat malt is a digestive supplement, usually in paste or gel form, made from malted cereal extract. It is not related to the barley used in beverage production – it is a functional ingredient, rich in natural sugars like maltose, combined with oils and fats that help lubricate the digestive tract.

Its main function is to facilitate the passage of ingested hair through the intestine, preventing it from accumulating and forming hairballs (trichobezoars). This is why most of these products are found in the "digestive health" or "hairball elimination" sections of specialized stores.

What is malt used for?

Cats spend a significant part of the day grooming themselves, which leads to the constant ingestion of loose hair. In most cases, this hair passes through the intestinal tract without problems, but in some cats – especially long-haired breeds, animals that shed a lot of hair, or cats that over-groom due to anxiety or stress – the hair can accumulate and cause digestive discomfort, frequent vomiting, or, in more severe cases, intestinal blockages.

Malt acts precisely at this stage, helping the hair to move through the intestine instead of accumulating in the stomach. It can also contribute to a softer coat, as many formulas include essential fatty acids with benefits for skin and coat.

How to use?

Most of these products are applied directly to the cat's mouth, on the front paws for the animal to lick during grooming, or mixed with their regular food. The quantity and frequency vary depending on the brand and malt concentration, so you should always follow the instructions on the packaging or veterinary guidance.

As a general reference, malt is usually recommended a few times a week as a preventative measure, or daily during periods of more intense shedding. Kittens under six months of age generally do not need this type of supplement, and most manufacturers recommend use only from that age onwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cat malt have contraindications?
It is generally safe, but excessive use can cause loose stools. Cats with chronic digestive problems should only use it under veterinary guidance.

Can I give my cat malt every day?
It depends on the product and the animal's situation. For prevention, many brands recommend a few times a week. During shedding, it can be daily. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.

From what age can I give my kitten malt?
Most manufacturers recommend use from 6 months of age.

Does malt replace regular cat brushing?
No. Malt helps eliminate ingested hair, but regular brushing remains the most effective way to reduce the amount of loose hair your cat swallows.

When should I seek veterinary attention instead of using malt?
If your cat vomits very frequently, stops eating, has persistent constipation, or shows signs of lethargy, seek veterinary attention – it could be a sign of an obstruction or another problem that malt cannot resolve.
