Transparency on how we obtain, process, and present the nutritional information of our products.

Introduction

At NutriPetPlan, we want to be as transparent as possible, so that you can make an informed decision about what you feed your pet. On this page, we explain, in as much detail as possible, where the data for each product comes from, how we process it before publishing it, and how we present it on each product's page.

Whenever a value on a product page is calculated or estimated instead of coming directly from the manufacturer, we clearly indicate it with a "Calculated value. How?" link that brings you back to this page.

How do we obtain the data

The data for each product comes directly from our suppliers and brands — technical data sheets, labels, and official analytical statements. Each supplier organises and provides this information differently: some provide complete analytical tables, while others only give general indications on the packaging.

Our work begins by gathering all this scattered information and compiling it into a unique and consistent format, so that you can confidently compare products from different brands, within the same structure and with the same level of detail.

How we handle data

Once collected, the information from each supplier undergoes an extraction and validation process assisted by proprietary artificial intelligence models, which interpret technical text and label declarations and transform them into structured data. Each value is then verified before being published.

The objective is never to rewrite or embellish the information – it is to present the most rigorous and transparent version possible of the data that the brand itself already declares. When a value is not directly declared because it does not exist in the source, we calculate or estimate it based on industry standard methods, and we always mark it as such. The two most common cases are carbohydrates and moisture, explained below.

Carbohydrates — how we calculate

Most brands do not indicate the percentage of carbohydrates on the technical data sheet or label — usually only protein, fat, fiber, ash, and moisture are declared. Therefore, we calculate carbohydrates using the Nitrogen-Free Extract (NFE) formula, the standard method used throughout the animal feed industry:

Carbohydrates % = 100 − (Protein % + Fat % + Fiber % + Ash % + Moisture %)

This formula estimates carbohydrates by difference, based on the other analytical values, rather than being a direct laboratory measurement. It is an approximation widely accepted and used by pet food manufacturers and nutritionists worldwide — but it is still an estimate, which is why we always mark this value as "calculated" on the product sheet.

Humidity — when do we use a standard value

When a supplier does not declare the exact moisture percentage of a product, we apply a standard industry-typical value depending on the type of food: 8% for dry food and 70% for wet food (pâtés, pouches, cans). These values reflect the usual moisture content for each format but are not the result of a laboratory analysis of this specific product — which is why they are also marked as "calculated"/estimated on the product sheet.

We are actively working with brands and suppliers to obtain, product by product, the actual moisture values declared by each. As we receive them, we progressively replace the default estimates with real data.

Energia Metabolizável — como calculamos as calorias

Quando o fabricante não declara diretamente as calorias (kcal/kg) do produto, estimamo-las através dos Fatores de Atwater Modificados, o método recomendado pela AAFCO e pela FEDIAF para calcular a energia metabolizável de alimentos para animais de companhia:

Energia Metabolizável (kcal/100g) = (Proteína % × 3.5) + (Gordura % × 8.5) + (Hidratos de Carbono % × 3.5)

O resultado é depois multiplicado por dez para obter o valor final em kcal/kg. Estes coeficientes (3.5 / 8.5 / 3.5) refletem a digestibilidade real de proteínas, gorduras e hidratos de carbono em cães e gatos — mais conservadores do que os fatores originais de Atwater usados em nutrição humana — e só são usados como estimativa quando o valor calórico não vem declarado na fonte, sendo sempre assinalados como "calculados" na ficha do produto.

How do we present the data

We aim to present information concisely and practically, in tables and short visual summaries, so you can quickly evaluate a product and make a good decision without having to read pages of technical text.

That's why each product sheet includes an analytical constituents table, a table of recommended doses by animal weight, and a calculator that estimates how many weeks a package should last depending on your pet's weight and activity level — all built from the same processed and verified data we described above.
